Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day - Dick Carruthers, 2012
On
27 December 2007, English band Led Zeppelin held a one-off reunion concert which
saw 20 million fans storming over 18 thousand tickets. Now, five years later, supervised by band member Jimmy Page, the show was
brought back to screen by Dick Carruthers who filmed the event. With Jason
Bonham (son of late drummer John Bonham), Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John
Paul Jones perform all of Led Zeppelin’s signature songs such as Kashmir, Dazed and Confused (wherein Jimmy Page re-enacts the remarkable
guitar solo with a violin bow), and even ones they have never performed live.
The audience does not need to know every number to lose themselves in the music
because Led Zeppelin’s musical harmony is indescribable. With extreme close-ups
showing the members’ least expression (and even the famous symbol painted on
Jones’ bass guitar), Plant’s refined singing over Bonham’s powerful drumming
seem more impressive. But the star of the night is actually Jimmy Page,
listening to his extended solo in In My
Time Of Dying, you could understand why Led Zeppelin is considered one of
the initiators of heavy metal music. Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day is an undeniable
reminder of the power of this great rock band, immortalised by the image of thousands
of people mesmerised by the melody of Stairway
To Heaven.
